Revival:Prayer is Not a Substitute for Obedience

by A.W.Tozer on April 14, 2020

"For EVERYTHING that was written in the past was written to teach us..." (Romans 15:4)

Before the glory of God filled the taberncle that the Lord commanded Moses to build, Moses carefull obeyed everthing the Lord asked him to do:

"Thus Moses did; according to all that the Lord had commanded him, so he did." (Exodus 40:16)

In fact, the phrase "As the Lord had commnded Moses" is repeated throughout Exodus 40, culminating in the glory of God filling the tabernacle:

V.19...... as the Lord had commanded Moses.
V.21...... as the Lord had commanded Moses.
V.23.......as the Lord had commanded Moses.
V.25...... as the Lord had commanded Moses.
V.27...... as the Lord had commanded Moses.
V.29.....  as the Lord had commanded Moses.
V.32...... as the Lord had commanded Moses.

"THEN the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle." (Exodus 40:34-35)

The revival that we are all praying for is not going to come on our terms. It is going to come on God's terms. It will come when we obey the Lord pursuing unity and rejecting division/polarization, pursuing humility and rejecting pride, pursue purity of heart, being people of no guile and rejecting hypocrisy.

Revival: Prayer is Not a Substitue for Obedience
by A.W.Tozer

"He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." (John 14:21)

Intensity of prayer is no criterion of its effectiveness. A man may throw himself on his face and sob out his troubles to the Lord and yet have no intention to obey the commandments of Christ. Strong emotion and tears may be no more than the outcropping of a vexed spirit, evidence of stubborn resistance to God's known will....

No matter what I write here, thousands of pastors will continue to call their people to prayer in the forlorn hope that God will finally relent and send revival if only His people wear themselves out in intercession. To such people God must indeed appear to be a hard taskmaster, for the years pass and the young get old and the aged die and still no help comes. The prayer meeting room becomes a wailing wall and the lights burn long, and still the rains tarry.

Has God forgotten to be gracious? Let any reader begin to obey and he will have the answer.

Isn't that what we want after all? The Size of the Soul, 20-21.

"Lord, help me to obey Your commandments. My spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak! I long to live in that obedience, in order that I may know the Father's love and manifestation to me. Amen."
